Range Of Motion Exercise

Range Of Motion Exercise

Range of Motion (ROM) exercises are designed to help improve or maintain the movement of joints and muscles. These exercises are crucial for enhancing flexibility, reducing stiffness, and preventing joint and muscle problems. They are commonly used in physiotherapy to aid in recovery and improve functional movement.

Active Range of Motion (AROM)

  • Performed by the patient using their own muscle strength without assistance.
  • Helps strengthen muscles and improve joint function.
  • Examples: Lifting your arm over your head, bending and straightening your knee.

Active-Assisted Range of Motion (AAROM)

  • Performed by the patient with some assistance from a therapist or a device.
  • Useful when the patient has limited strength or is in early recovery stages.
  • Examples: Using a strap to help lift your leg, having a therapist support your arm as you move it.

Passive Range of Motion (PROM)

  • Performed by a therapist or caregiver without any effort from the patient.
  • Essential when the patient cannot move the joint themselves due to injury, surgery, or severe weakness.
  • Examples: A therapist gently moving your arm in a circular motion, stretching your leg.

Benefits of Range of Motion Exercises

  • Improves Flexibility: Keeps joints flexible, enhancing overall mobility.
  • Reduces Stiffness: Prevents stiffness and maintains joint health, especially after inactivity.
  • Prevents Contractures: Prevents permanent tightening of muscles, tendons, or skin that restrict movement.
  • Enhances Circulation: Promotes better blood flow to muscles and joints, aiding faster healing and recovery.
  • Boosts Muscle Strength: AROM and AAROM exercises help build and maintain muscle strength, crucial for functional movement.
